Is social media dying?

Is social media really dying or are the existing users ageing and shifting to different platforms? It might be unclear what the reality is and what the future holds but I do feel that there are various factors contributing to social media frustration.

Lack of trust

Privacy issues

Brand fatigue

Rise of fake news

Overdose of advertising

Bot-driven influencers

Excessive competition for more eyeballs

Information overdose…

…are increasingly making people run away from the social sphere!

Facebook is the biggest contributor to the overall decrease in social media usage. According to a report by Edison Research, Facebook usage by Americans dropped from 67% in 2017 to 61% in 2019. While Facebook users are declining, Instagram on the other hand is experiencing a steady rise from 34% in 2017 to 39% in 2019.

It’s fair to assume that younger demographics are shifting to platforms like Instagram or Snapchat and at the same time it’s interesting to note that 55+ age segment of respondents were the only group whose Facebook usage had increase since 2017 as per Edison Research.

As Kirk Hazlett says, social media is plateauing and soon we might have something more exciting and creative within the existing platforms.

Having said that, did you hear Mark Zuckerberg’s recent announcement at Facebook’s F8 developer conference? He announced that “Facebook would transition away from the News Feed and public posts and towards a ‘privacy-focused’ communications platform.”

Now isn’t that a massive shift and turnaround for the company?

Do you still think social media is dying?

Perhaps NOT. As people have evolved with social media and have become aware of the nuances of platforms and their own privacy, we have reached a tipping point and will soon see the next evolution of social networks.

The future is private and we want to make users social experience more intimate! – Mark Zuckerberg

While I’m 100% with Zuckerberg for changing the vision of his company, we will need to wait for these changes to unfold and see what the future holds.

In the midst of the resurgence of social media, Influencer communities have become a powerful voice across social channels. Growingly, brands are relying on Influencers marketing and increasing their budget spends. However, the authenticity and credibility of Influencers is quite debatable.

Is the bubble set to burst on Influencer Marketing?

Well, I’d say not yet. Just like social media channels, Influencer marketing will simply need to adjust to overcome the challenges it has been facing around the issues of authenticity and credibility. It’s a gradual evolution and we will continue to see changes in the coming years.

Succinctly put, social media is not dying, it’s just going through a phase of change to meet the needs and wants of the netizens.

What are your thoughts?

Although Ancita was part of the PR team, she gradually started taking interest in digital communication which I believe is an apt field for her. She effectively used her communication skills learnt in PR to deliver results in digital media which is a much needed talent in the industry. We worked together on google maps and on a project called PMOAppContest chat where Ancita ably demonstrated her creative and storytelling skills. She defined the flow of the chat and was a key campaign owner. The initiative was a huge success in India. Ancita is committed, disciplined and a diligent person and I am sure she is a great asset to her team and her organization.
