Twitter For Business & Personal Brand

I have come across a lot of people including C-suite executives who have repeatedly told me that:

They really don’t understand Twitter

It’s not their “thing”

What’s so cool about the social network?

How does it help grow their business or credibility in the industry?

Have you heard these questions before? I bet you have!

Let me take you through why this social network should be a must have strategy for business owners or C-suite executives in any organisation.

Why Twitter?

Twitter works for EVERYONE, no matter which industry you are in. According to recent statistics, there are approximately 328 million monthly active users on Twitter globally. 27 million are from India and is expected to increase over the next few years.

Now imagine connecting with these people from across the globe who share similar interests as you or your business?

“With 328 million monthly active users, you don’t want to dismiss the power of Twitter.” –@MadalynSklar

What’s in it for the C-suite?

Expand your network: It’s easy to find and segment the audience on Twitter and expand the network.

New business opportunities & lead generation: Of course, the network created will open possibilities of exploring new business opportunities or generating leads.

Thought leadership: It is essential for any C-suite to position themselves as a thought leader in the industry. Twitter serves for an excellent tool to establish thought leadership.

Increases credibility: A CEO who is seen and heard consistently in the industry, adds credibility to the company as well as to their personal brand.

“Having a talkative & accessible CEO on Twitter is a very powerful, yet underrated strategy. Adds credibility to brand.” –@Socially_M

Builds Trust: By consistently having conversations with the audience including customers, influencers and the media, one can build trust overtime. As people get to know you better, like and trust you, the community starts to grow exponentially.

Authenticity: Customers love to communicate with leaders behind any brand. It shows human side of the company and establishes a deeper connect with them.

Real-time feedback: Twitter isn’t just a platform for expanding network or building trust and credibility but can also be used to get real-time feedback of product/service. C-suite can take direct feedback and can fix things well in time, before it blows up and haunts them or their business.

What next?

Be consistent: If you’ve decided to have presence on Twitter, you got to be consistent with content. It sure does take a lot of hard work but once you have established your presence and built the network of like-minded people, you’ll love interacting with them on an ongoing basis.

Focus on people: Social media is all about people. Don’t forget the social in ‘social media.’ Be human. Engage. Interact. Respond.

Experiment: There is no one magic formula for a successful Twitter strategy. Experiment with the content you share. Which content is attracting the audience more, what’s getting more impressions and continuously tweak your content strategy.

Check your Twitter Analytics regularly to see what is working and what isn’t. You can access it at https://analytics.twitter.com

Share valuable content: Why would anyone be interested in your tweets if they don’t add any value to your audience? Your content should educate, inspire, engage and make a deeper connect with people who are following you.

Remember, you are building future ambassadors and advocates for yourself and your brand.

“If you’re passionate about something, talk about it. Twitter amplifies that tenfold and your passion is infectious.” – @Socially_M

Twitter chats: One of the best ways to be seen and heard is to be active on Twitter chats. There are plenty of them on various topics and it’s easy to find communities with interests similar to yours and be a part of the conversation.

That said, don’t be salesy or rude to your followers, don’t automate tweetsListen to your followers, be approachable, like, reply, re-tweet, connect and engage with people. It really does go a long way!

How can success be measured?

Quality over quantity. While gaining followers consistently is a sign of success, there is no end to increasing that number. What matters the most is the quality of people following you and how well you are engaging with the community. Success can also be measured by the reach and impressions your content is generating.

“Think of Twitter as one big happy community that connects you with millions of people.” –@MadalynSklar

Are you ready to take the leap and build your brand on Twitter? Which C-suite executive do you admire who has utilised Twitter to grow their business & personal brand? For me it will definitely be @anandmahindra and @warikoo! How about you? Do share your thoughts in the comment section below!
